»The Magic of YUANFEN«
Searching for Masters of Healing and Ancient Chinese Wisdom
Stefanie Schweiger & Phoebe Hui
Dorothée Nilsson Gallery is pleased to invite you to the Book Launch of »The Magic of YUANFEN – Searching for Masters of Healing and Ancient Chinese Wisdom« by Stefanie Schweiger (Photography & Text) and Phoebe Hui (Text), published by Kerber Verlag.
“The Magic of YUANFEN is an amazing trip through a China that most people—foreign or local—rarely see. It is a world of shamans and priests, mysterical energy lines and high peaks, reclusive hermits and warm human interactions. A quest to understand China’s spiritual traditions, it is also a book with universal value, its texts and photos working together seamlessly to reveal the wonder that underlies the human condition.”
Ian Johnson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Souls of China: The Return of Religion After Mao
The book will be presented as part of an pop-up exhibition and a reading.

Stefanie Schweiger and Phoebe Hui set out in search of ancient wisdom, hidden worlds, alternative medicine and faith in China. In words and pictures they tell stories about encounters with Chinese masters of healing and their teachings. Their paths lead them to Buddhist secret societies, shamans, hermits, Taoists, herbalists, Tibetan doctors, Bimos, Feng Shui experts and monks. They explore whether wisdom passed down for thousands of years can be reconciled with modern life in contemporary China. The book lays out a nuanced panorama of China’s diverse beliefs, much of which is virtually unknown in the West.
The research for The Magic of YUANFEN was funded by the “Crossing Borders” program of the Robert Bosch Foundation and Literarisches Colloquium Berlin.
