BROT (BREAD) is a cultural asset and an indispensable staple food in large parts of the world. In the Palaeolithic at the latest, grain was ground into flour and then probably cooked or baked to make the grains edible. The oldest bread remains ever found are over 14,400 years old. But BREAD is more than crust and crumb, more than flour, yeast, water, salt and heat. BREAD is a feeling, a memory, is childhood, family and community. BREAD is a symbol and sacred to many. BREAD is also metaphor and subject in art. Artists have always dealt with BREAD – from Man Ray to Salvador Dalí, from Käthe Kollwitz to Maria Lai 2017 at the Venice Biennale. BREAD is spoken about – more than 500 proverbs are about BREAD.

The photographers of the Fotoatelier am Schönen Berg (FASB) approach the subject from a variety of directions. BREAD is viewed, observed, described and processed. The result is photographic sculptures, associative image and text compositions, the interweaving of BREAD with literature and poetry, stagings and installations, street photography, still lifes and everyday observations. Sometimes the camera seeks proximity to the subject, sometimes it is an observer from a distance. There are infinitely many stories about BREAD – we tell eleven of them.
