Iren Böhme

Winter makes textures in nature seem clearer and purer. The snow not only muffles the sounds of our noisy world, but the white of the snow also limits what can be perceived visually, and therefore makes the country seem quieter to the eye.

Over the last few years, Iren Böhme has created a number of photographic series which take this as their starting point and their theme: her pictures depict landscapes or parts of landscapes which are visually simplified by winter.

Other photographs show patterns consisting of the remnants of plants or of shadows that appear like writing: not necessarily decipherable, but meaningful and beautiful, symbolic.

A third group of works adresses what could be called the „secret life of ice“: patterns of frozen plant material, encapsulated air and cracks in the ice of frozen lakes. With their very own world of shapes these are reminiscent of cosmic structures: distant planets or galaxies, evolving spiral nebula etc.

Iren Böhme’s photographs are quiet: some are very restrained, almost brittle, others extremely poetic. In a very unobtrusive manner they tell stories about the beauty of the world around us – an unassuming beauty which sometimes only reveals itself to the patient observer.

Iren Böhme, born in 1964 and an architect by profession, is a passionate photographer. In recent years, she has shown her work in a number of solo exhibitions as well as participating regularly in group shows. Since 2014 she has been a member of the artist group Blaue Ampel.
