The Auschwitz Album
In cooperation with the Embassy of the State of Israel, the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus presents the exhibition of Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center “Auschwitz – A Place on Earth: The Auschwitz Album“.
Six million Jewish children, women and men were systematically murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Over one million were murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest German extermination camp during World War II.
The Auschwitz Album is the only known photographic record of the process of arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau, selection, confiscation of property and preparation for mass murder.
The unique document was given to Yad Vashem by Lilly Jacob-Zelmanovic Meier. Eighteen-year-old Lilly was deported in the spring of 1944 along with her family and the majority of Hungarian Jews. She was the only one in her family to survive, and on the day of her liberation in the Dora concentration camp she found a photo album in the abandoned barracks – the “Auschwitz Album“.
