»Überleben im Müll«

(Survival in the garbage)

Christoph Püschner, Dodi Reifenberg, Hartmut Schwarzbach

The plastic crisis of mankind – 400 million tons of plastic are produced around the world annually. Plastics are everywhere. Today’s trends also become tomorrow’s garbage. But there are approaches to how humanity can escape the plastic age. The European Plastic Pact provides for a functioning circular economy to be established in Europe by 2025.

Two photojournalists pick up the mountains of garbage for us from a safe distance and show us moments from reality on site: Christoph Püschner documents the everyday life of waste pickers in India and Hartmut Schwarzbach accompanies children who collect the floating plastic waste of the global throwaway society in the bay from Manila (Philippines). For the past two decades, the life situation of children in Asia and Africa has been a priority for him. In 2019 he won the UNICEF Photo of the Year with his report.

The artist Dodi Reifenberg has been referring to environmentally relevant questions with his projects for many years and used an extraordinary material for this: Almost all of his works consist of plastic bags. This creates a sculptural image with its own aesthetic qualities. This is to draw the viewer’s attention to the tacit acceptance of the damage that plastic waste does to our environment.
