Johannes Daniel. Paintings / Daniel Poller. Photography

Johannes Daniel (*1987) avails himself of conventional painterly means and develops these into topical pictures. This process of image crafting is central to his works, in which he brings to light the conditions and possibilities of painting. He is particularly interested in the transformation of everyday situations, of viewing perceptions in exhibitions or hearing and reading experiences as well as of digital images in his artistic works. Through the repetition and sampling of pictorial ideas and fragments the artist points to the fundamental unreachability of a conceptual construct in painterly expression. From this permanent confrontation arises Daniel’s compulsion to continue on.

The eleven motifs of the series “Der große Gewinn” by Daniel Poller deal with the history of the reconstruction of the Braunschweig castle. Poller reproduced and enlarged the pages of a calendar with old photos of the castle on pigment prints in a format of 160 x 110 cm and then effaced parts of the historical motifs with an eraser. This erasing produced white areas with which the photographer refers to the contingency of the realisation of every kind of “reconstruction” when it is based on historical photographs.
