»Coast to Coast:
Light and Shadow in America 2017«

Kathleen Michael

I viewed the total solar eclipse during the final day of my visit to the United States last summer.
The phenomenon had not occurred since 1979, the same year I left the country.
I found the event to be a symbolic culmination of my journey from coast to coast, light and shadow in America.

Over the years my experience when reentering the United States again as a visitor had been as if I were transported to a familiar, yet foreign country. Echos from the past were combined with the constantly changing face of my homeland.

The election of Trump and my fears about the ominous future of America compelled me to make an epic month long journey in the summer of 2017.
I commenced with the coast to coast odyssey in New York, my birthplace; a stop over with family in Ohio and concluded in San Francisco where I lived between 1968-1979.

I longed to travel back to my roots, to capture frozen moments of joy and pain, light and shadow, through the lens of my camera. My goal was to use my photos as a documantation of the various expressions of “American Way of Life”; it’s humanity or the lack of it.

The photos serve as a visual diary of situations I encountered and chose to photograph due to the subjects ability to evoke my emotions.
The spectrum of images presented in “Coast to Coast: Light and Shadow in America 2017” reveal the diversity inherent in the social fabric of the nation.
