»Stories of Remembrance«

Istvan Bielik, Borut Krajnc, Florian Rainer, Imre Szabó

Organised by KuBiPro Kultur-und Bildungsprojekte e.V.
and Stiftung Haus der Demokratie und Menschenrechte

The European photography project “Stories of Remembrance” aims to make citizens more aware of the fates and realities of refugees from former Yugoslavia and today’s refugees coming to Europe from different countries worldwide.

The Yugoslavian wars caused the biggest refugee crisis in Europe after WWII. More than a million people were displaced from their homes and many found a temporary or permanent home outside of their country’s borders. These displaced people left a trail of stories which can help better understand the past and also the difficult fate of refugees today. The photographic exhibition presents photographs of migrants during the Yugoslav wars and pictures of migrants today and shows works from European photographers Borut Krajnc (Slovenia), Florian Rainer (Austria), Istvan Bielik (Hungary) und Imre Szabó (Serbia), who accompanied these in different stages of their trail.

More than 25 years have passed from the beginning of the Yugoslavian wars and in this time a whole generation has come of age. Even in former Yugoslavian countries these wars are a thing of the past and many of the lessons, which should have been learned, have been forgotten. The exhibition is thus a contribution to a critical and considerate controversy around the ever so present theme of refugees in Europe. It aims to raise awareness of European citizens, who are more and more caught in the middle of nationalistic discourses around the allegedly “other”, that “threatens” Europe and show them individual realities of that so-called “other”.

The opening reception at 18:30h will be followed by a discussion / talk at 19:30h, with refugees from former Yugoslavia, today’s refugees and experts, telling their “Stories of Remembrance”.
