Stefanos Pavlakis
Contemporary metropolises consist of malls, residential units, shopping promenades and car parks… Where amongst those could you visit a public site conceived for peer-to-peer political exchange? In his photographic work UNDER ERASURE, Stefanos Pavlakis visually highlights an ongoing political process that takes place on the facades of the city of Athens, and is – in most cases – considered a criminal act: The writing on walls. Pavlakis’ work engages with political graffiti in such a way that an aesthetic palimpsest of color surfaces in the photographs, something more reminiscent of abstract painting than of the ongoing attempts of various groups to voice their political claims or beliefs. In UNDER ERASURE the smallest architectural details of a city emerge encoded in the play of light and shadow. A city whose art, architecture, and political ideals continue to shape Western culture today.
