The group show “Framing Identity” is a photographic examination undertaken by members of the Generation Y; it explores aspects of the environments of people who were born between the early eighties and late nineties. The term “Generation Y” was coined in 1993 and has since been used in sociology to define the social group whose members lived their teenage years at the beginning of the millennium. The characteristics that can be assigned to this generation are being widely discussed in academia and in the media.
The show “Framing Identity” surveys the elements that inform the identity of the Generation Y, and throws a contemporary photographic “eye” on their pursuit for existing role models.
Museum for Photography Braunschweig will present the works of ten young international artists who explore various aspects of their environments – often personal and intimate areas that may also include tabooed topics. Their artworks examine their self-image and identity, and highlight and question socially assigned roles, in a personal, familial, and political context.
“Framing Identity” tries to explore current discourses and perspectives on the identity-seeking members of Generation Y at the beginning of the 21st century, by providing direct examples from contemporary artists and photographers that belong to this very generation. The artists use the medium in various and versatile ways. Thus, the exhibition shows a wide spectrum that includes documentary works, installations, or the special photographic medium of passport photographs; interactive projections, video works, but also a series that is in part presented on self-operable smartphones – which thus highlights the importance of the new media also in the concept of this exhibition.
