Solo Exhibition & Book Launch
»Pieces of Berlin 2014-2018«
Florian Reischauer
The cityscape is as fleeting as the moment the camera is triggered and a picture is taken. To show the face of Berlin and to catch its authenticity and diversity, are crucial to the ambition behind of Pieces of Berlin.
Florian Reischauer founded the project in 2008, and has been publishing it in form of a blog since 2010. Pieces of Berlin 2014-2018 is already the second printed volume, and will be launched as part of an exhibition in the neurotitan gallery.
Pieces of Berlin has to be understood as a project of demographic photography, concerned with documenting our fellow humans and their everyday lives, as well as the city’s constant development and change. The people portrayed are selected in the streets, at random, and asked questions about their lives and their relationships with Berlin. People from all social classes, from various districts in Berlin, are brought out of their urban anonymity.
Quickly rising rents and the fear of being displaced from organically grown neighbourhoods in the inner city are emerging as central issues in the interviews collected over the last years. How can social division, caused by the growing commercialization of housing, be averted, or at least mitigated? This question is addressed in an additional chapter of the book, with the resulting texts by Andrej Holm, Lukas Grasskamp, Dagmar Pelger and Anna Heilgemeir, Michael Prütz, and Georg Hubman discussing the issue and offering solutions and visions for the future of Berlin.
