Photography: painting with light. Photographers create their images from the elements of light, time and space.
In many respects, light is perceived positively. The light of Enlightenment dispels the dark Middle Ages, the light of spring ends the winter und means a fresh start. Light represents transparency and openness. Truth comes to light, proverbially, political and social role models rise to the position of luminous figures. Light is the carrier of a great power that can inspirit as well as destroy. Referring to photography, light shapes spaces and brings structures to life. It forms the image of the bodies without being physical itself. But under certain circumstances it burns the image, makes colours fade away and shapes disappear. Light offers guidance in the dark, on the one hand. On the other hand, it can blind you and is qualified for manipulation and the abuse of power.
Whereas of darkness is often connoted negatively – danger lurks in the dark, it favours secret dealings, “figures that shun the light” bustle there – we find leisure, quietness and comfort there, too. Darkness is the medium for the dreams in the night, for creativity and ecstasy.

The images exhibited were taken between May 2017 and February 2018 and are the results of the project class “From Darkness into Light” of the Photocenter Gilberto Bosques of the Adult Evening Classes in Berlin Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The male and female photographers deal individually with light and darkness and present their photographic involvement with the subject ranging from physical phenomena to the metaphoric use of light in culture and society.
