»Still Waters«

Thomas Keller

‘Still Waters’ bares witness to quiet, still places which provide contemplative space to the distinctly coming-of-age portraiture of Thomas Keller. Germanic small towns, hushed city scapes and the winding roads leading through mountains between offer placid landscapes within which a selection of young women unfalteringly display at once both self-assurance and unease. A Strange melancholy pervades the images, enveloping like a silken web, enervating and soft.

Born in Winterthur, lives in Berlin since 2004. For the past twenty-five years, Thomas Keller has completed over fifty international exhibitions and received numerous awards for his work, including: the work semester for photography of the Swiss cultural foundation Landis & Gyr, as well as the scholarship of the Foundation Kunstfonds in Bonn.

For some years, the photographer and artist has become evermore dedicated to the moving image with special attention to time and duration. In his latest works he uses the means of film, video and photography to reflect on the relationships between identities and territories as well as their impact on architecture and urbanism. Since 2009, he has been working intensively on Jack Kerouac’s texts, biography and locations in the USA (Lowell, Mass. and Washington State).

Thomas Keller teaches experimental documentary film and photo book at the University of Applied Sciences Europe in Berlin. Since 2008, together with the American photographer Todd Weinstein, he conducts the annual Street Photography Workshop in New York.

Still Waters is presented in collaboration with Replika Publishing as a pilot for a future iteration of this project which will be presented in Replika Volume III: Black Box.
