In conjunction with the exhibition at the Haus am Kleistpark, Berlin (May 12 — June 28, 2020), Mike Chick is pleased to announce the release of his monograph “Log Book”. As in previous projects, he deals with his personal roots in a historical context, here with the theme of identity and family with reference to recent European history. The starting point for this new work is the Royal Air Force log book which belonged to the artist’s father and which documents his activity as a pilot during World War II, as well as a photograph taken during one of his father’s flights over Nuremberg in August 1943.
Between 2017 and 2019, he travelled to twenty-six European cities in Germany, Italy, France, and Poland, all of which had been among his father’s destinations, 75 years after they appeared in the original log book. We encounter contemporary nighttime photographs of buildings, streets, and urban spaces that challenge our ideas of time, place, and memory.
Mike Chick is a British-German photographer and artist. He first studied Modern Languages at Oxford University, then photography at the London College of Printing, now University of the Arts. He has been selected for the Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Association of Photographers Awards, London, and the International Photography Awards, New York, among others. He lives and works in Berlin.
