Protest cultures and digital worlds in transition

Julia Autz | Daniel Chatard | Bob Jones | Georg Kußmann | Igor Samolet | Kristina Savutsina | Jakob Schnetz | Yorgos Yatromanolakis

Curated by Franziska Habelt & Finn Schütt

Currently, many phenomena of transition are emerging in society: digital communication technologies and new concepts are changing our working and private lives, globally active protest movements are using digital possibilities for networking and publicity-effective campaigns. A more conscious approach to people and nature and growing democratic movements as well as the striving for a more open society – as expressed in the recent protests in Belarus and the movement against the Climate change – are evidence of a new social commitment. Moreover, the debate about structural change in regions dominated by coal mining and different developments in urban and rural areas bear witness to the lines of conflict that these changes entail.

What role can artistic photography play in these different processes of change? What kind of representation does it pursue? Does it actively participate and take a stand or does it remain a distanced observer? Does it transform the means of fast-moving digital communication or the process of change itself into components of the artistic work? Eight young artists reflect the current social challenges and transformations in multimedia works.
